The amount of spam that is generated through Twitter has been dramatically reduced in the last year. This number has dropped down to 1%. That is a very low percentage. Even though 1% seems like a very small number, Twitter receives about 50 million tweets every day. With 1% of those tweets being some kind of spam, one way or another, that is still 50,000 spam related tweets every 24 hours. This number seems like a lot, but considering the massive amount of traffic on the internet, that is actually a very small number.
