As a few social networking heavyweights seize control of the majority of market share, there’s still money to be made filling in the gaps, through clever applications that round out the site experience or for tying several together into one convenient tool. Seesmic is positioning to cover both these fronts by buying ping.fm, one of the more popular tools for updating multiple social networking sites. If they can successfully merge the two programs into one dynamic product, they could actually outlast the services and grow as an extremely useful Tweeting tool.

Twitter’s recent success with its microblogging website has spurred it to expand its staff, and it has focused on recruiting great staffers from other web-based networking and entertainment websites. Recent hires that will be starting in 2010 come from such companies as Google, Cloudera, TiVo, Bebo, Quik, and Ning. It was recently announced that Twitter will be hiring Bakari Brock, a lawyer who specializes in syndication, music, and video law, and who formerly worked for Google.

I found a new Twitter service this week called Tweexchange and found it very useful when setting up new Twitter accounts. The site allows user to determine whether a specific username is available on Twitter. If the name you want is already taken, it will suggest other names. It also provides a for-pay service to notify you if a name is on “pending removal” and becomes available to you. I didn’t know this service exists, so I found the article interesting and informative. Tweetexchange also includes a mention of a “GoDaddy” partnership which shows which domain names similar to your search are available.

After reading an interesting article on Cnet regarding new technology coming out in 2010, I noticed that many of these announcements were made via twitter. It is interesting that the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (on January 7) was announced on Twitter rather than other traditional forms of med. The main topics of interest in 2010 according to twitter announcements are tablets, e-book readers and Smart televisions. I like the mention of the iPhone app to navigate your way through the convention because this shows how integral smart phones are becoming and shows a sample of how they will be used in the near future. I look forward to reading twitter updates of the show and about these new electronics and see what is unveiled at the show.

Social media has become the hot new trend for companies to jump on the band wagon, but Twitter has become a very useful tool for them to reach out current and prospective customers. There are various different approaches with companies have taken, but the most effective seems to be direct interaction with customers. Companies such as Dell and Starbucks are using it to promote deals and coupon codes while others are using it as an alternative customer support option, but more importantly it is a new way to get closer to customers and react to customers’ feedback. Add a Twitter button to your website connect and interact with your customers today.

One of the best new features is the “Twitter Lists.” These lists allow you to organize your followers into different groups and share these groups with other people. So, for example, you can create your top Tech Bloggers and then share them with your friends or other people. Third parties have even begun to create services to help people create lists. One of the more popular websites is Listorious which allows users to search a directory of Twitter Lists via keywords. Check out these new Twitter trends and third party websites to help you manage your online identity.

USA Today came out with an article this week about how Twitter is changing customer service online. It was extremely interesting because customers are more satisfied with their experiences due to the fact it was such a quick response and got right to the heart of the problem. Although, this has become a trap since it is creating “instant gratification” which has set expectations at a higher level and when companies to do respond to problem instantaneously. But, many Fortune 100 countries such as Dell, Comcast, and Vistaprint have found a lot of success with it and have changed gears to cater to the online community.

Twitter is dumping the “suggested users” list? Since it has emerged, I’ve been trying to figure out how Twitter decided who to suggest I should become friends with. Well, apparently that was part of the problem since there was no rhyme or reason to it and exactly why they are now scrapping the model, but not the idea completely. They plan on redoing it and try to find a more systematic way to suggest people to follow. Twitter also released a statement stating that they will be adding new features in the upcoming future as well.

It is interesting to see how Twitter has become so integrated throughout the web as well as in our daily lives. Microsoft just announced that Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm will now be available for Xbox live users with a Gold Account. With this update, you will now be able to update your Twitter status while playing video games on your T.V. How will this change how we interact with our T.V. and video games in general? Are we becoming more social via electronic means or are we depersonalizing human interaction? I think that it is helping us connect on a global scale and will eventually bring us closer together in every aspect of our lives.
